What the old sarge thinks: This brings back old feelings for me, while stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in the early 1970’s it was suggested that we not wear our uniforms when off post. That was a volatile time in the USA, Vietnam war, demonstrators, etc…….. Being a soldier was not the most respected profession, we were often insulted and it would just make my blood boil.
I was drafted into the service and liked my life, hence by the 1970’s I had reenlisted twice. Today’s soldiers are all volunteer, they wear the uniform because they want to, they have pride in what they are doing along with love of their country. In my humble opinion Military Service is an honorable profession, one that commands respect from those that are served.
We have continuously had soldiers stationed in Germany since 1944, I was one of those soldiers in 1961. Even at that time you could sense some resentment from the younger generation, the older folks respected us and appreciated what we did. Today that younger generation is the older folks and see us as invaders, not protectors.
Europe is near an eruption of violence, serious violence, ie, Greece and other countries. Maybe it is time to bring our soldiers home, the military is stretched thin with two wars and near a third with our intervention in Libya. We have asked our service men and women to repeatedly deploy to a war zone, some have been there for 8 deployments. Let me tell you, once you complete a combat assignment, there is mental anguish when you have to go back.
I think it is time for the major part of USA Europe to come home, those 10’s of thousands could take the pressure off the rest of the services.
