Missing my summers in the mountains

scan0027

I know, I know, it was a miracle that someone knocked on our door with a request to buy our house.  It was a miracle because after we closed on the house and came back to Florida just 3 months later I started my three year battle with cancer.  The battle is not finished but I am feeling so much better I long for some of the wonderful days we spent in Podunk.

No matter how hard you look you cannot find an old house consumed by Kudzu in West Palm Beach.

There is nothing like the Dillard House in south Florida or friends like Wade and TC.  It looks to me like Wade is admiring that basket of homemade donuts on the table…..

I miss having tomatoes on the vine in our little garden, and fresh picked corn on the cob.

And yes, I miss Fried Green Tomatoes, maybe Miss Bee will make me some……

You may be deprived, even ignorant, but for some reason you never found the gumption to sample this traditional Southern favorite you have missed a real treat. Some of you folks have narrow point of view, thinking that tomatoes ought to be red and fresh, not green and fried, wrong.......

Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

3 medium, firm green tomatoes
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup milk
2 beaten eggs
2/3 cup fine dry bread crumbs or cornmeal
1/4 cup Vegetable Oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Cut unpeeled tomatoes into 1/2 inch slices. Sprinkle slices with salt and pepper. Let tomato slices stand for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, place flour, milk, eggs, and bread crumbs in separate shallow dishes.

Heat 2 Tbsp of oil in a skillet on medium heat. Dip tomato slices in milk, then flour, then eggs, then bread crumbs. In the skillet, fry half of the coated tomato slices at a time, for 4-6 minutes on each side or until brown. As you cook the rest of the tomatoes, add oil as needed. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Add a little spicy dipping sauce and your taste buds are in for a treat.

If you are fixing any of these let me know, I will drop in for a spell…….

I love my fried green tomatoes...dipped in Ranch Dressing. Yum. There are still places to stay up in the hills, come on back.

Alas, I can no longer eat anything fried or anything with a high acid content, like tomatoes! Acid Reflux. Ack.

I loved your mountain home, too! I can just bet how much you miss it!

Hoping Miss Bee makes you some FGT!

Big hugs hon xoxo

I love stuff like fried okra, fried green tomatoes, fresh cucumbers with red onions in vinegar and sugar- and ice cubes! Slices of ruby red tomatoes and ripe watermelon. STOP! I want some!!! Throw in a grilled rib eye (rare) and I'm done!

I love this kind of food the best. Good old-fashioned Southern style cooking. The picture of the fried chicken made my mouth water.

Where can you get "green" tomatoes? Most places only sell fully ripened tomatoes. This is a serious question.

I'm sure you both miss your mountain Sarge. Too much work, but I know you miss your mountain. It will always be your mountain Sarge.

Have a terrific day. Big hug to you and Miss Bee. :)

I can certainly understand why you miss your mountain home but I guess all things happen for a reason and you can have fried green tomatoes and good times with good friends no matter where you may be. Besides, I get the feeling that your most favorite place is wherever you are with Miss Bee at your side!
