In the Shadow of Vietnam……….

L_B_Johnson_Model_Khe_Sanh

Walt Whitman Rostow showing President Lyndon B. Johnson a model of the Khe Sanh area in February 1968

Yep, what goes around comes around, in my day our fearless Commander in Chief got so involved that he had a sand box in the Whitehouse to aid in his tactical decision making.  Oh, but wait a minute, we the taxpayer bare the expense of sending young men to West Point and other Academies in hopes that they will grow up to be great Generals and have the tactical knowledge to lead men in battle and win our wars.  But alas, we have men who grow up to be president and Commander in Chief who naturally acquire the knowledge required to win wars.   In LBJ’s case the net result was the loss of the war in Vietnam.  He knew best and overrode the Generals who were doing their job.

Quoting one of the Old Sarge’s personal heroes, General George Patton:

"You must be single minded. Drive for the one thing on which you have decided. You will find that you will make some people miserable; those you love and very often yourself. And, if it looks like you are getting there, all kinds of people, including some whom you thought were loyal friends, will suddenly show up doing their Goddamndest, hypocritical best to trip you up, blacken you, and break your spirit. Politicians are the worst; they'll wear their country's flag in public, but they'll use it to wipe their asses in the caucus room, if they think that it will win them a vote."

And an second quote:  “Politicians do not know anything more about real battle, than [he] does about fornicating.”

God knows the Old Sarge loves General Patton.

FAST FOWARD TO 2011

Like Johnson, BHO has inserted himself between the troops and their commanders, and is making decisions based on political expediency rather than a determination to win the war in which we’re engaged.  Even though the Pentagon, General David Petraeus, and Speaker Boehner have asked him not pull out our troops  he has made the political decision to pullout 33,000 troops prior to our 2012 election season.

History repeats itself, will President Obama suffer our second loss of a war?

BHO always knows best in his world of one. That is what we get with a community organizer.

Big hugs my friend...

As a current member of the Armed Forces I am not authorized an opinion on the Commander in Chief. However, I will say that Germany and Korea seem better for us being there than having pulled out earlier. Germany only took 15 years after WWI to start another world war, we stayed, they improved. Pulling out too soon will cause that history repeating issue to arise again. Kind of like Iraq, 1990, 2003? Keep up the good work Sarge.

Thanks Dean, I understand since I could not have posted this in 1975. I only hope you do not have to feel that your effort was for nothing when this is over.

Afghanistan is over. It was over years ago. Mission creep set in and distorted our reason for being there. There is no reason to be there...there is no fortuitous end game for us.

Our true enemies do not exist in Afghanistan, they lie elsewhere. In Pakistan..,In Iran...In North Korea. Afghanistan is a joke.

While we try to rebuild and modernize Afghanistan, China buys copper mining rights in Afghanistan. The U.S. tries to stabilize a country while China reaps the benefits from the country we try to stabilize.

Fuck That.

I feel compelled to come to the aid of IWS Radio.

Our enemies aren't in Afghanistan. This is one of the dynamics I have had trouble understanding about my conservative brethren. They now support humanitarian nation building, instead of applying our full force and effort towards eliminating the enemy where they are located.

The common theme of the argument is to imply that a 'victory' in Afghanistan will weaken the resolve of jihadi's worldwide. Yet, apparently no thought is given to the much more impressive effect of shortening the lifespans of the cadre who inspire these more malleable holy warriors.

and I feel compelled to ask you for your qualifications to disregard the commanders in the field.

I noticed no rebuttal of the facts presented.......

But the Commanders aren't always right, and don't always prioritize what is for the good of the nation versus what is the inherent reaction of any serving flag officer when it comes to the mission they are given.
