Why did S&P downgrade The USA Credit?

Do you know the last our country had it's credit downgraded? December 7, 1941 wow that date rings a bell in my memory bank, oh yes that is the day that someone said "this date will live in infamy". Well let's see, the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor, wiping out most of the Pacific fleet, launched our country into WWII. I suppose that is the reason we were downgraded.
Fast forward to April 18, 2011. Is this a day that will live in infamy? Back in '41 there was ample reason to see our credit stressed, how is today similar? Let's see, there was no surprise enemy attack, at least not a foreign enemy but it seems there is an enemy attacking us from within.

Yep, we are being attacked from within, by our political leaders, they are using the US Treasury as a slush fund. Today our President made another stupid speech blaming everyone but himself for our problems, it is time for Americans to take their country back.

2nd worst president in my lifetime, but he's working at taking over the number one spot. He's the biggest finger pointer I've ever seen too. It's not working.

Have a terrific day Sarge. :)

Your chart is fairly misleading. The national debt should be tracked in relation to the GDP of the country. So, while it is true that the national debt has always risen numerically, it has gone down in relation to the yearly GDP from time to time.

To determine exactly how much, you also need to figure in current inflation. But yes, long story short, our national debt has only decreased once in recent memory, and that was under Bill Clinton. It increased the most in recent memory under George W. Bush.

As for under Barack Obama, it remains to be seen how the debt will look under his first term as president, but you're right in supposing that it won't be overly positive. The only pluses that Barack Obama has going for him at the moment are that the sizes of the annual federal spending increases that we became used to under George W. Bush have decreased, and that the GDP has grown more in 2010 than it has in the past 5 years.

So, if things continue as they are Barack Obama will leave a better financial legacy than George W. Bush, but that unfortunately isn't saying much.

What we need from our president is for him to actually stick his neck out there for some real change. Good ideas are all well and good, but we need more than that. Him finally backing the campaign promise of his to rescind the tax breaks for 200K+/250K+ is a big first step, but we need a lot more than that. We need a lot of corporate tax reform, and corporate legal reforms too.

I know that's where the money is, but we elect our leaders to speak for us and work to take the misplaced majority of the burden from off the backs of the middle class. If our elected officials will not stand against the injustices of the system that has been created in America and work to change it, then who will?

So yeah, I want to see Barack Obama and our representatives to stop with the oblique promises. I want to see a real plan for real positive change, and to see our leaders fight for it. Even if it ultimately fails because of the greed of others, I can at least respect a legitimate attempt.

I can not respect someone who promises to help me against the people who always make laws that harm people who make far less than 200K a year, but then all that happens is he blames those people. Honestly, I've got that part down, the rich people have gotten far richer and everyone else has gotten poorer, now fight for me and be my voice, that's why you were elected!

Like I said, pushing for the return to Clinton era tax levels is a good start, but we need more if we want a good economy again, and that means putting yourself on the line and taking some fire.

As you know, my dad died in '69 and my mom in '92. I can't begin to imagine what they would think about this! For the first time in my life I'm actually afraid for my future in the U.S. We just need to get on our knees, I'm thinking.
