Yellow Bellied Sapsucker of the Week

yellow_bellied_award_3_thumb[4]

This lowdown person was nominated by my friend Lois at “Lowdown from Lois” .  She suggested that the defrocked Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Charlie Rangel, Congressman from the Harlem for 40 years………

When Speaker Pelosi took the gavel she promised the “most ethical and honest Congress in history” and also promised to “drain the swamp” in Washington if Democrats where elected to the majority.

How’s that swampy-changy thing goin’ for ya?

What really ticked Lois off was when he played the poor war veteran card, Rangel said yesterday that “60 years ago I survived a Chinese attack in North Korea and as a result I haven’t had a bad day since. But today I have to reassess that statement.”

Lala’s Christmas

The following was posted by my Granddaughter last December while she was in Georgia, she was here for the Christmas Cruise and her man had gone off to the war.  I copied the post when she posted it because it was something from her heart, her loneliness, her sadness, the life of a military wife.  Having spent a major portion of my life in the military I can understand what she was feeling, separation  from the person you love is always bad, that is magnified during the holidays and those feeling were exposed in this post.

so so tired

And where are you, and what time is it, and how long until I see you, and how long until you're home?

This deployment feels like a heavy weight on my head, sitting on my chest, squishing me and hurting me and lasting a real long time. It squeezes tears from my eyes and makes me cry little sobs that make my nose run and my face turn red and my head hurt. It makes me grateful that I can type without looking at the keys because I can hardly see the screen.

I'm sitting in my step-sister's old bedroom, back against the door, in my jeans and socks and a shirt, feeling cold in the basement. It feels like every second pauses a little, dragging itself out, lasting for a small eternity.

In my head, I try to plan out my week, but it's too stressful. I don't like Christmas. Lights and greens and reds and people coming home for the holidays, but then some not coming home for the holidays. Being alone for the holidays, but not really alone, just mostly alone.

My camera lens broke today, the one Matt gave me for an early Christmas present. It was an accident, a friend somehow broke the autofocus, but still I sit here crying about it because I feel like I was irresponsible with something that Matt gave me before he left.
I just want him back, back here, holding me, telling me not to cry, we'll go to Best Buy tomorrow to get it fixed and until then, let me hold you hold you hold you until you fall asleep and the tears stop flowing and you see that I'm not leaving you alone ever ever. Except that I will have to leave you alone when my country calls, and I must go to protect those brave men fighting on the ground, fighting for freedom with courage and a little fear, but fighting still. And I will keep those men safe from those things that would hurt them, seek to harm them; I will fly above them, thinking of you, but doing this service for them and also for you, but so far from you.

Here I thought that writing it all out would make the tears stop flowing but they keep falling, and I think ahead to this week, and I worry about packing my suitcase, because on the way from Seattle to here, it was 9lbs overweight, and they wanted to charge me $30 extra unless I fit the 9lbs into my carry on. Which I did, but it made my carry on way too heavy and I couldn't lift it into the overhead. And I'm worried because my flight leaves so early and I'm not sure how I'm getting to the airport because I'm not good at driving at night. And if I do make it, then I worry that my flight will be canceled when I get to my layover because of bad weather at my final destination, and then I'll be stranded in another state with no way to get home.

I just want Matt here to tell me that we'll figure it out together, that I've been strong for a while now but I can stop trying to be brave and just relax into his strength and let him handle all these hard things that are sitting on my chest, hurting me and worrying me and making me cry tonight.

Please excuse me, I'm not being a "MILITARY WIFE" tonight, I'm just being me, and I'm so so tired of being without him.

The sad part is that regardless of how much we would like to take your pain away, it is impossible. It is always worse during the holidays and you will feel some relief after they pass. I did spend some Christmases separated from you grandmother and the kids, it is always hard but you just have to buck up and get past this time, he will be home soon……

What the Old Sarge has to say about that:  Yep, little girl, you were sad, you were lonely, you were angry, and it is all over now and look how fast you forget all that lonely stuff.

Anne is famous now……..

GA_RNT Yep, this is my home-town news paper from way back in the olden days when the old Sarge was young.  We would have to cut out a story from this news paper when I was in school for current events assignments.  If you read the banner it says the paper has been in business for 167 years, holy crap, they are older than me.

Actually I did not live in Rome, our farm was 18 miles from the city in Floyd County, Georgia.  Rome is the county seat and only real city in Floyd County.  In the 1950’s it was booming with a population of about 18,000, over the years it has grown to a population of around 40,000.

The DeSoto Theater built in 1928 and as I remember it from the 1950’s

Above is the DeSoto Theater on Broad Street, Rome, Ga. I stood in line for over an hour to buy a ticket to see “Love Me Tender” when Elvis’s movie first came out.

And this is Broad Street, back in the 50’s this was the place to be on a Saturday night, we would cruise from one end to the river bridge on the other end, back and forth, not sure why, but it was fun back then…….

She is a beautiful old southern city and to be honest, not much has changed in the downtown in the past 55 years since I moved away.  Makes an old man proud to go home.

Holy crap, sorry about all the nostalgia, I don’t know what came over me to throw that stuff into this post, it has nothing to do with my subject.

GA_RNT

One of my first cousins who are still in Rome, Ga sent me a link to an story about her in the newspaper, I suspect she was a little proud of it but I also understand why.  Yep, little Anne did good for herself and is now retired and living the good life, you go girl, you did it the old fashioned way, you earned it…….

Anne

Anne spent the better part of 30 years at the Floyd County Prison. Not behind bars, mind you. Rather she helped run the place since 1979 and was the warden for a decade until she retired in 2008. She saw the local prison system transform through the years from a 40-man chain gang to a 450-bed prison with a 100-bed work release center.

Now at 61, Anne is reveling in retirement. She especially enjoys traveling.

“Because of my career, my favorite trips have been to prisons! The most exciting were personal tours through Folsom in California and Angola in Louisiana,” says Anne. “Folsom was interesting because it is older, larger than most, and the California system is different from Georgia. Angola is huge, and Warden Burl Cain is renowned for his success in turning it around from the bloodiest prison in the U.S. to one of the best.

“I visited the Hanoi Hilton in Vietnam where our soldiers were held as POWs. It was amazing and heart-touching. And, of course, Alcatraz (which reminded me of the old Floyd County Stockade). Probably not something everyone could get excited about, but for me it was awesome.”

Her retirement gift to herself was a trip to Disney World with her family. “It was great for my grandsons and nieces, but I believe I was the one who had the most fun. Wonderful memories and a dream come true in a magical place.”

It might not have been the most exotic trip, but it was one of her most memorable because it combined her love of travel with her love of family.

“My passion is my family and friends. I believe the most joy in life comes from those you love and care about. I hope to spend the rest of my life making memories and being a person who makes a difference in others’ lives.”

Anne has been in Rome most of her life except for a four-year stint in Rapid City, S.D. Some might be surprised to know she once worked for South Dakota State University with the Launch Control officers of the Minuteman Missiles.

She now enjoys a quieter life here. “Since retirement I am enjoying working in the yard, reading and just watching the birds. These are things I never had time for during my working years and I have had to learn to relax.”

Of course, she’s planning on more traveling too, especially when her husband retires in a few years.

“My dream trip is touring the Greek Isles.”

“Bon Voyage Cuz” little hillbilly girl did good for herself and now she is ready the cruise the Mediterranean sea and enjoy the fruits of her years of labor, you go girl.

The  Woman Marine Pilot

The teacher gave her fifth grade class an assignment: Get their parents to tell them a story with a moral at the end of  it. The next day, the kids came back and, one by one, began to tell their stories.

There were all the regular types of stuff: spilled milk and pennies saved. But then the teacher realized, much to her  dismay, that only Janie was left.

"Janie, do you have a story to share?'

CaptSarahDeal

''Yes  ma'am. My Daddy told me a story about my Mommy. She was a Marine pilot in Desert Storm, and her plane got hit. She had  to bail out over enemy territory, and all she had was a flask of  whiskey, a pistol, and a survival knife.

 untitled (2)

"She drank the whiskey on the way down so the bottle wouldn't break, and then her parachute landed her right in the middle of 20 Iraqi troops. She shot 15 of them with the pistol, until she ran out of bullets, killed four more with the knife, till the blade broke, and then she killed the last Iraqi with her bare hands."

''Good Heavens,' said the horrified teacher. 'What did your Daddy tell you was the moral to this horrible story?

This is my country, and I fought for you…

I wonder what stupid remark Matt Man will have for this….

SPECIAL NOTICE TO A FRIEND:  My grandsons should watch this as continuing education.

Something about this video that makes my eyes leak…..

Hat Tip:  BUSHWACK at American and Proud

Mama Grizzles, go girls….

Thanks to my friend Donald

I love this clip. All three of these women, wives and mothers with busy lives at home and in the workplace, are running for elective office. It takes a lot, especially fundraising. Some day I may throw my hat in the ring, although this blog probably wouldn't help my campaign, LOL!

I for one would urge you to toss the old hat Donald, it is time to take our country back, these ladies are planning to do just that.

Folks, it may be the the post about the invasion by the Mexican Drug Cartel in Laredo, Texas is untrue. I have taken it down until I can verify the facts.

According to the Laredo Police, the Web County Sheriff and the Border Patrol, none of them know anything about this. It was reported. Until confirmed by someone in authority, it's only a rumor. That's what this appears to be.
