Another American Hero, Veteran of the Battle of the Bulge

This post has challenged the Old Sarge, you see a Miss s.r.powers left me a comment on my post about the Sullivan Brothers……..

s.r.powers said...

As the very proud daughter of a recently deceased Purple Heart veteran of Patton's Third Army, I loved this post.

You folks that know the Old Sarge will know that comment was just what it takes to get me going so……….

Ms Powers I went to your page and could not enter the blog. I would love to know more about your father. I wish I was old enough to serve in Patton’s Army, he is my hero. My father served in the Navy in the Pacific.

Today Ms Powers and I will call her Susan for the rest of this post……

Blogger s.r.powers said...

Thank you Sarge. I only have I profile so I can comment, I do not blog myself, but here is a link to my Dad's obituary; he was a wonderful man.   (link omitted from this post)

Here are some things I learned about Susan’s father:

He graduated from high school and entered the Army in 1943 and served in the 101st Infantry Regiment, in the 26th Infantry Division of Patton’s 3rd Army. He participated in four major campaigns and received the Purple Heart for wounds received during the Battle of the Bulge. He also received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, The New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, and his battalion received the Presidential Unit Citation for combat during the Battle of Northern France. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class in January 1946.

Her father, JP, graduated from Princeton University with the class of 1947.

What I want to do with this post is to show Susan some of the places and things that her father did during WWII.

JP could have been in this Chow Line

The Relief of Bastogne

Units of Patton's 3rd Army turned north from their former eastward path of advance, and in just three days elements of the 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division fought through the surrounding Germans to the beleaguered Bastogne garrison, reaching them on 26 December. They opened the "Assenois corridor" and immediately began ground resupply and medical evacuations. The relief of Bastogne was one of the most astonishing military operations of the war. Third Army’s unprecedented swift change of direction and attack hit the still advancing Panzers from the rear, deflating the German offensive and preparing the way for the Allied counterattack in January 1945.

Since JP earned a Purple Heart Medal he would have been treated in this manner by unit medics prior to evacuation to field hospital.

It’s over, I am out of here…….

JP passed away at the age of 86 on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, we are losing the Greatest Generation at a very rapid rate, take time to visit and thank anyone you know, we are free today because of great men like JP.

I tip my hat to you JP……..

Even after the recent Super Bowl victory of the New Orleans Saints, I have noticed a large number of people implying with bad jokes that Cajuns aren't smart.  I would like to state for the record that I disagree with that assessment.  Anybody that would build a city 5 ft.below sea level in a hurricane zone and fill it with Democrats is a damn genius.

If you want to hear his words:  http://www.barackobama.com/2010/

Obama speaks with frankness about his coalition in his appeal to “young people, African-Americans, Latinos, and women who powered our victory in 2008 [to] stand together once again.”

Excuse me folks, I am just a simple man and may have missed something here but that sounded raciest and divisive to me. I suppose since I am an old white man that the president wishes I would stay home at the next election, how about our Asian citizens Mr President, would you like them to vote? Did women include old women who are struggling to live on Social Security and now fear for their health care, do you want them to vote?

You Mr. President, are a RACIEST, Bill Clinton told you is South Carolina, but it was no secret, your words told us prior to the election, you won a raciest election when the black vote was 44-1, you play to your base Mr President and us raciest white folks will kick your ass out of office in 2012.

Please read what should have been read prior to the 2008 election, it could have changed the results……….

Another day in history, the greatest generation……

USS Juneau

USS_Juneau_(CL-52)_0405201

The first USS Juneau (CL-52) was a United States Navy Atlanta-class light cruiser. She was laid down by Federal Shipbuilding Company, Kearny, New Jersey, on 27 May 1940, launched on 25 October 1941, sponsored by Mrs. Harry I. Lucas, wife of the mayor of the city of Juneau, Alaska.

sullivan-brothers-photo-01 I would like to introduce to the Sullivan Brothers, yep, those smiling faces are five brothers George Thomas (12/14/1914), Francis Henry (2/18/1916), Genevieve Marie (2/19/1917), Joseph Eugene (8/28/1918), Madison Abel (11/8/1919) and Albert Leo (7/8/1922).

When reports were received about the death of their friend, Bill Ball, who was on the battleship Arizona when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, they decided to enlist in the Navy. They did insist, however, that the Navy allow them to stay together throughout their service. The Navy agreed. On January 3, 1942, less than a month after Pearl Harbor, they were sworn in at Des Moines, and left for Great Lakes Training Center.

The USS Juneau was commissioned on 14 February 1942, with Captain Lyman K. Swenson in command. The crew included the five Sullivan Brothers. Following a hurried shakedown cruise along the Atlantic coast in the spring of 1942 the cruiser departed for the Pacific Theater on 22 August.

A large U.S. Navy task force left New Caledonia on November 8, 1942 to bring reinforcements and supplies to the beleaguered Marines at Guadalcanal. At the same time the Japanese had sent a contingent of their navy to resupply their army on the other side of the Island. On November 12th the American ships and Marine aircraft destroyed an attacking Japanese group of aircraft. One of the U.S. vessels was the light Cruiser, the Juneau.

Despite having radar, the American ships almost collided with those of the enemy. The engagement began about 1:45 A.M. There was no moon that night and there was instant chaos as searchlights suddenly illuminated the two adversaries at close range to one another. All ships unleashed their barrage of heavy armaments at point blank range. Within 30 minutes the engagement was essentially over. The Japanese lost a battleship and two destroyers. Five of the 13 U.S. ships had been sunk or were heavily damaged. Many men were lost, including the task force commander, Rear Admiral Callaghan. The Juneau had just barely survived, having received a torpedo hit on it’s port side which left a gaping hole and an almost severed keel.

At daybreak the surviving American ships huddled together and headed back to their base. Late that morning, a torpedo fired from a Japanese submarine, struck the Juneau near the storage area of its ammunition supply. “When the torpedo hit, there was a single explosion and the air was filled with debris, much of it in large pieces. The whole ship disappeared in a large cloud of black, yellow black, and brown smoke. The five Sullivan brothers were killed in action as a result of its sinking.

The “Fighting Sullivan Brothers” were national heroes. President Franklin Roosevelt sent a letter of condolence to Tom and Alleta. Pope Pius XII sent a silver religious medal and rosary with his message of regret. The Iowa Senate and House adopted a formal resolution of tribute to the Sullivan brothers.

Thomas and Alleta Sullivan, in spite of the intense pain of losing their five sons all at once, made speaking appearances at war plants and ship yards in behalf of the war effort. They hoped that they could help prevent the loss of other American boys. Their daughter, Genevive, often accompanied them, until she joined the WAVES on June 14, 1943. In April of that year Mrs. Sullivan christened a new destroyer, U.S.S. The Sullivans, in San Francisco. This ship is moored at Buffalo, New York as a memorial to the five brothers. Today there is a park and playground where the Sullivan house once stood.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

"Dear Mrs. Sullivan:

"The knowledge that your five gallant sons are missing in action, against the enemy, inspired me to write you this personal message. I realize full well there is little I can say to assuage your grief.

"As the Commander in Chief of the Army and the Navy, I want you to know that the entire nation shares your sorrow. I offer you the condolence and gratitude of our country. We, who remain to carry on the fight, must maintain the spirit in the knowledge that such sacrifice is not in vain. The Navy Department has informed me of the expressed desire of your sons; George Thomas, Francis Henry, Joseph Eugene, Madison Abel, and Albert Leo, to serve on the same ship. I am sure, that we all take pride in the knowledge that they fought side by side. As one of your sons wrote, `We will make a team together that can't be beat.' It is this spirit which in the end must triumph.

"Last March, you, Mrs. Sullivan, were designated to sponsor a ship of the Navy in recognition of your patriotism and that of your sons. I am to understand that you are, now, even more determined to carry on as sponsorer . This evidence of unselfishness and courage serves as a real inspiration for me, as I am sure it will for all Americans. Such acts of fate and fortitude in the face of tragedy convince me of the indomitable spirit and will of our people.

"I send you my deepest sympathy in your hour of trial and pray that in Almighty God you will find a comfort and help that only He can bring.

Very sincerely yours,
"/s/ Franklin D. Roosevelt"

Arizona Immigration bill in provokes protest

250px-Janet_Napolitano_official_portrait

Millions of Arizonans where pleased to see former Gov. Janet Napolitano pack her bags and move on to Washington and Homeland Security Secretary.  I suppose that depends on your point of view, she has been a total failure at her new job, she has weakened a Nation and failed to protect the Boarders endangering the American People.

She failed to secure the southern boarder with Mexico and the State is now overrun with Illegal immigrants.  Citizens of Arizona are being murdered, raped, and kidnapped by Mexican drug gangs and smugglers walking across the boarder.  Her experience in dealing with Arizona’s immigration problem was cited by president Obama in her appointment to Homeland Security.   Good job Prez……..

Napolitano was the Veto Queen of Arizona vetoing more bills that any other governor.  Bills she has vetoed include one denying in-state tuition and day care for illegal aliens and one allowing law enforcement to enforce immigration law on May 20. On May 10 she also vetoed a bill making English the official state language which would have allowed the state to save money by not having to provide all official documents in multiple languages and would have encourage assimilating immigrants into the American culture more effectively.

Republican Rep. Tom Boone said, "The illegal immigrant has in Governor Napolitano (his or her) best friend in the state."

 jane_brewer2AZ Gov. Jane Brewer

Arizona's Republican Gov. Jan Brewer signed a controversial immigration bill into law on Friday, calling it "another step forward in protecting the state of Arizona."

The bill, SB 1070, came in response to a spike in violence along the state's portion of the U.S.- Mexico border. It will make it a state crime not to carry proof of legal immigration status and will require Arizona's state and local police to ask about a person's immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that he or she is in the country illegally.

Oh My, they will have to carry their “Green Card” hang on, isn’t carrying the card required by Federal Law.

USCIS law states that every Permanent Resident should carry their Permanent Resident Card on them.

MEXICANS RIOT OVER NEW ARIZONA LAW

004

COMMEARY:   Where is Bill Clinton now?  Last week he was blaming Tea Party folks for inciting violence and comparing the Tea Party to Timothy McVeigh. Yet, here’s a riot started by protesters against the new law in Arizona to toughen up enforcement on illegal immigration in Phoenix on April 23. Bottles were hurled at police and threats of violence that make even the rowdiest Tea Party look like a church picnic.

Where is the networks condemning this action, where is the President condemning this activity, oh, he was busy inciting the riot by calling the law misguided.  The only thing misguided here is the President, his sworn duty is to protect and defend the citizens of the USA, that includes Arizona, do you feel safe today?

Barack-Obama-arrogance-150x150

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Is it just me, or do you question his oath…………….

Air Force One Goes down in middle America

Notice for Matt Man, it is a joke………

3484169708_5442f3820d

Air Force One crashed in the middle of rural America.  Panic stricken, the local sheriff mobilized and descended on the farm in force.  When they got there, the disaster was clear.  The aircraft was totally destroyed with only a burned hulk left smoldering in a tree line that bordered a farm.  The sheriff and his men entered the smoking mess but could find no remains of anyone, including the President

A AAFREEZE
They spotted a lone farmer plowing a field not too far away as if nothing at all happened.  They hurried over to the man's tractor.

"Hank," the sheriff yelled, panting and out of breath.  "Did you see this terrible accident happen?"

039_34633

"Yep.  Sure did." the farmer mumbled unconcernedly, cutting off the tractor's engine.
"Do you realize that is the airplane of the President of the United States ?"

"Yep."

"Were there any survivors?"

"Nope.  They's all kilt straight out," the farmer answered.  "I done buried them all myself.  Took me most of the morning..."

A AASHOVELREADY

"President Obama is dead?" the sheriff shouted.

 A AALIES

"Well," the farmer grumbled, restarting his tractor.  "He kept a-saying he wasn't...
But you know how bad that s.o.b. lies."

The Taliban and the Jew

A fleeing Taliban, desperate for water, was plodding through the Afghan desert when he saw something far off in the distance.  Hoping to find water, he hurried toward the oasis, only to find a Little old Jewish man at a small stand, selling ties.

The Taliban asked, "Do you have water?"

The Jewish man replied, "I have no water. Would you like to buy a Tie? They are only $5."

taliban-13225925__MBQF-1251396412,templateId=renderScaled,property=Bild,width=227

The Taliban shouted,  "Idiot! I do not need an over-priced tie. I need water! I should kill you, but I must find water first!

"OK," said the old Jewish man, "It does not matter that you do not want to buy a tie and that  you hate me.. I will show you that I am bigger than that. If you continue over that hill to the east for about two miles, you will find a lovely restaurant. It has all the ice cold water you need. Shalom."

Cursing, the Taliban staggered away over the hill.

Several hours later he staggered back, almost dead and said, "Your brother won't let me in without a tie!"
