Tis the season to be jolly.........

Original post December 19, 2006

Well folks, the following is Christmas Story from my childhood, I do hope it puts you in the mood for a great holiday.

I am not sure but I think it is 1940 or 1941, I am sure it was in Armuchee, Georgia prior to my daddy being drafted into WWII. It was early winter and we were eagerly waiting for Christmas. My brother and I both were expecting to get cap pistols and cowboy suits from Santa Clause. I would be about 5 years old at the time.

Mama and daddy were both at work one day when we were snooping around the house, it is about a week before Christmas. Lo and behold, what do you think we found. You would be right, two cowboy suits and two shiny cap pistols and a couple of boxes of cap rolls. The temptation was just overwhelming, you know we had to try them on. We were just going to make sure they fit, so out of the boxes they came.

I am telling you, with my cowboy suit and pistol strapped on, I became Gene Autry, man, if I just had a horse named Champion. My brother was riding a broom like he was on Trigger, he was Roy Rogers.

After I was done with Gene, I suddenly became Hopalong Cassidy, riding the purple sage.

Well the smart thing to do would be put the stuff back in the boxes and wait for Christmas but sometimes you just can’t do the smart thing. The screen door slammed behind us as we rode of on the range looking for Johnnie Mack Brown, and the Lone Ranger. What fun we had, shot up all the caps cause the Indians were after us, ripped a hole in my pants when I went through a barbed wire fence.

It was getting on to time for mama and daddy to get home so we rode back to our house. We took the stuff off and put it back in the boxes, we were sure no one would ever know. Wrong, Christmas morning when we opened the box my mama noticed the hole in my pants and the mud on the knees, we were busted. I suspect they were upset with us but we didn’t get a whooping on Christmas.

I wonder if kids still do things like that................

I love this story! And yes, kids still do stuff like this.

My sister Janice just told me last night that she set out to wrap some of the gifts after the kids went to bed last night, but she had hidden them so well, she couldn't remember where she had hidden them! It took her over an hour to find them! hahahaha!

I hope your Mama mended your tear and that you got more caps for shootin' more of them injuns!

I hope you and Miss Bee have the Merriest Christmas ever, Sarge. Big hugs :]

My sis and I found our presents one year, I think when we were in 5th grade. We opened them up, then rewrapped them. No surprises Christmas morning, and the worst Christmas ever. Never did that again!

I was SUCH a good child. Amy admitted a few years ago that she would always unwrap her gifts to sneak a peek...and I never caught her, the little devil.

Merry Christmas to you and Bee and OCD. And a Happy New Year!

Big hugs, honey.

My sister and I always snooped. Trying to get the package wrapped properly after you've opened it is a real tough job. I love this story and kids are still doing the very same thing.

Have a terrific day Sarge. Tons of love and big hugs to you both. Have a very Merry Christmas. :)

My you were such a cute little boy. What happened to you? Ha,ha,ha. Sorry Charlie, I just to say it. Man you were a little rascal when you were young. Not like me. I was a angel when I was young ( I better not see that I said that or she'll tell you what really happened ).
I hope that you and Bee have a wonderful and peaceful Christmas Day but I guess you could be a little rascal if you want just for one day. Merry Christmas my friend.

As I was reading this story I could still smell the scent in the air from firing off those roll caps!

Such a great story of what I bet was one of your best Christmases!

Merry Christmas, Sarge!

Ha! Love this story!

A friend shared with me that her young son told her, "Momma, I need to write a letter to Santa." She told him no, that he had already written to Santa and told him what he wanted and it was too late to ask for anything else.

He said, "I don't want to ask Santa for anything. I was going to tell him not to worry about bringing me a pitching machine because I just found a really cool one in your closet."

So yes Sarge, kids still do things like that :)
